Purpose of the User Documentation

As an Instructional Design Student Assistant at the BMS Lab, I created a user documentation to support the University of Twente's Researchers, Teachers, and Students when using the Eye Tracking web application.

What is Eye Tracking?

Eye Tracking is a web application that enables researchers at the University of Twente to create an experiment in order to track the eyes of their participant. Within the Eye Tracking experiment, the researcher can create several trials and analyze the results of all participants through a gaze plot and heatmap plot.

Steps when Creating

Based on the ADDIE model, I designed the User Documentation.

1

Analysis

According to the Development team and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), there has been some confusion among new Researchers, Teachers, and Students about how the web application works. Therefore, the instructional goal was to address the learner's need of understanding the basic functionalities of the web application. Due to this and upcoming updates, a user documentation was chosen as the best delivery method.

Several learning theories were considered such as principles of signaling (= use of numbering), personalization (= use of you and I), segmenting (= learner-paced segments), and redundancy (= only use essential information). Also, gerund was adopted in the sub-heading style to convey progress and action from learner.
2

Design

Based on the instructional goal, I established the following learning objective: Introduce the Eye Tracking tool and provide directions and advice to Researchers, Teachers, and Students so they can get the most out of the tool.
3

Development

I segmented the documentation into (1) general overview of the tool, and (2) directions and advice to create an Eye Tracking experiment. Later, I shared the user documentation with the SME for revision.
4

Implementation

After approval, the SME uploaded the user documentation in the further information section of the website application.
5

Evaluation

To evaluate the content usefulness and satisfaction of learners, we asked feedback directly from learners that used the user documentation. We received positive comments.
