Purpose of the Workshop

As an Instructional Design Student Assistant at the BMS Lab, I designed a workshop to support the University of Twente's Researchers, Teachers, and Students when using the Audio Playground web application.

What is Audio Playground?

Audio Playground is a web application that enables researchers at the University of Twente to (1) automatically transcribe audio to text, (2) analyze audio, and (3) analyze text. Through the audio and text analysis, the researcher can obtain an overview of the total words spoken per turn and speaker, turn allocation per speaker, and the percentage of turns per speaker. Additionally, the text analysis enables the researcher to classify the data further through sentiment analysis and emotion analysis.

Steps when Creating

Based on the ADDIE model, I designed the Workshop.

1

Analysis

According to the Development team and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), there was a need to introduce the new web application to Researchers, Teachers, and Students and instruct them on how the web application works. Therefore, the instructional goal was to address the learner's need of understanding the basic functionalities of the web application. Due to this and upcoming updates, a workshop was chosen as the best delivery method.

Several learning theories were considered such as Mayer's Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning and principles of picture-based signaling (= use of squares and transparency to highlight areas on picture), personalization (= use of you and I), segmenting (= learner-paced segments), and redundancy (= show only necessary information). Also, gerund was adopted in the sub-heading style to convey progress and action from learner.
2

Design

Based on the instructional goal, I established the following learning objective: Introduce the Audio Playground tool and provide directions and advice to Researchers, Teachers, and Students so they can get the most out of the tool. This learning objective was linked with the course content which was segmented into (1) general overview of the tool, and (2) directions and advice when using the three analysis methods.
3

Development

Using PPT, I developed the Workshop and shared it with the SMEs for revision.
4

Implementation

After approval, I presented the workshop to a Researcher/Teacher. Further notes were included in the speaker notes and was shared with the learner.
5

Evaluation

To evaluate the content usefulness and satisfaction of learners, we asked feedback directly from the Researcher/Teacher that attended the workshop. We received positive comments.
