Purpose of the Instructional Video

As an Instructional Design Student Assistant at the BMS Lab, I created an instructional video to support the University of Twente's Researchers, Teachers, and Students when using the Virtual Nature.

What is Virtual Nature?

Virtual Nature is a desktop application used by researchers at the University of Twente where various virtual nature scenes are created to study participants’ well-being, social presence, and more.

Steps when Creating

Based on the ADDIE model, I designed the Instructional Video.

1

Analysis

According to the Development team and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), there has been some confusion among new and existing Researchers, Teachers, and Students about how the software works. Therefore, the instructional goal was to address the learner's need of understanding the basic functionalities of the software. Due to this, an instructional video through YouTube was chosen as the best delivery method.

Several learning theories were considered such as Mayer's Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, Four Principles of Minimalism and principles of signaling (= use of circles to highlight), voice (= human voice with a standard accent), personalization (= use of you and I), segmenting (= learner-paced segments), redundancy (= use of only graphics and narration), and temporal contiguity (= use of graphics and narration at the same time). Also, gerund was adopted in the title style to convey progress and action from learner.

Design

Based on the instructional goal, I established the following learning objective: Introduce the virtual nature to Researchers, Teachers, and Students so they can get the most out of the software.
3

Development

I developed a video script where I emphasized the narration and the visual elements of the video. Later, I shared the video script with the SME for revision. After approval, I followed the video script and created the instructional video using the authoring tool "Camtasia".
4

Implementation

The instructional video was uploaded on the department's YouTube Channel and website.
5

Evaluation

To evaluate the content usefulness and satisfaction of learners, the metrics of the video (likes and comments) were observed and feedback was asked directly from Researchers that watched the video. We received a good amount of reactions (likes) and verbal positive comments.
