E-LEARNING COURSE THROUGH LMS

The creation of the interactive "Twente Intervention and Interaction Machine" (TIIM) web application E-learning course through a Learning Management System (LMS).

Purpose of E-learning Course

As an Instructional Design Student Assistant at the BMS Lab, I created a TIIM E-learning course to support the University of Twente's Researchers, Teachers, and Students when using the software.

What is TIIM?

Twente Intervention and Interaction Machine (TIIM) is a web and mobile application used by the University of Twente. Researchers and students at the University of Twente can use the TIIM web application to create interventions, cohort studies or questionnaires. Subsequently, through the TIIM mobile application, the researcher can gather data and/or distribute information/content to participants about different topics.

Steps when Creating

Based on the ADDIE model, I designed the E-learning course within the LMS.

1

Analysis

According to the Development team and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), there has been an increase of demand to provide workshops of TIIM to new Researchers, Teachers, and Students. Also, there were some upcoming updates and there was some confusion among existing learners about the link of certain TIIM functionalities. Therefore, the instructional goal was to address the increased course demand, new updates, and the learner's need of understanding the link between TIIM concepts. Due to this, an e-learning course through a LMS was chosen as the best delivery method.

Several learning theories were considered such as Mayer's Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, Four Principles of Minimalism and principles of signaling (= use of numbering in text and squares in picture), personalization (= use of you and I), segmenting (= learner-paced segments), and redundancy (= only use essential information). Also, gerund was adopted in the heading style to convey progress and action from learner.
2

Design

Based on the instructional goal, I established the following learning objective: provide Researchers, Teachers, and Students with essential information so they get the most out of TIIM. This learning objective was linked with the course content which was segmented in 8 modules and ordered in a logical manner.
3

Development

Using the LMS "EasyGenerator", I developed the E-learning course. A general intro, module learning objective, and module quizzes were integrated into the course. The complete course was later shared with the SMEs and Management for revision.
4

Implementation

I implemented the E-learning course on the department's Info Hub website, under "Further Support".
5

Evaluation

At the end of each module, the learner was asked a number of questions to test their understanding. Then, at the end of the entire e-learning course, their satisfaction was evaluated and feedback was asked. It is currently in the testing phase, but we have received positive comments so far.
