Purpose of the Digital Escape Room

As a E-learning Specialist for TNW at the University of Twente, I created a digital escape room for Module 4 Dynamics Course to increase student engagement during formative assessment and encourage problem solving within teams.

Steps when Creating

Based on the ADDIE model, I designed the Digital Escape Room.

Analysis

According to the teacher, students where engaging less in formative assessments and students were solving problems individually. Therefore, the instructional goal was to address the need of students engaging in formative assessment and work in teams to learn from each other while solving problems. The teacher proposed an escape room.

Design

Based on the instructional goal, we established the following learning objective: Increase student engagement and team work during the formative assessment through an escape room. For accessibility and to create a student life-long learning opportunity, we decided to design the escape room digitally on H5P.

Several learning theories were considered such as Mayer's Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, personalization (= use of you and I), segmenting (= learner-paced segments), and redundancy (= use of only necessary information).

Development

Using the course structure of the previous year, I created 4 rooms representing each sub-course and included examples to give the teacher an idea on the different possibilities.

Implementation

Planned for 2025 February. A pilot test session needs to be planned to evaluate the usefulness and satisfaction of learners.

Evaluation

Evaluation questions such as navigation and usefulness are planned to be incorporated in the end of the course student evaluation
